When working to embed a property named Doc No. I found at times one of the 3 following situations displayed in the Field list:<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms;\">\n<li>Doc No.<\/li>\n<li>Doc No. and Document No.<\/li>\n<li>Document No.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms;\">If i used <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Doc No.<\/span> the value would be incorrect. If I used <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Document No.<\/span> the correct value would display and would synchronize. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms;\">Upon investigation I looked at the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">AllLists<\/span> table in the database to find the row for the Document Library I was using. Examining the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">ContentType <\/span>column explained the behaviour. For the field <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Doc No.<\/span> this is the value I found:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms;\"><fieldRef ID=\"{339ab4a8-844a-47f0-89fa-a956de3af582}\" Name=\"Document_x0020_No_x002e_\"<br \/>DisplayName=&#8221;Doc No.&#8221;<br \/>Required=&#8221;TRUE&#8221; Hidden=&#8221;FALSE&#8221;<br \/>ReadOnly=&#8221;FALSE&#8221; PITarget=&#8221;&#8221; PrimaryPITarget=&#8221;&#8221;<br \/>PIAttribute=&#8221;&#8221; PrimaryPIAttribute=&#8221;&#8221;<br \/>Aggregation=&#8221;&#8221; Node=&#8221;&#8221;\/><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms;\">Notice that the name is <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Document No.<\/span> (after decoding) and the DisplayName is <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Doc No.<\/span> After seeing this, I remembered initially naming the column Document No. and then shortening it to Doc No. SharePoint obviously retained the original name as the ID of the field and just adds the DisplayName attribute to show the changed value. This is definitely a gotcha and will lead to some confusion for users.
