{"id":180,"date":"2010-12-22T20:58:00","date_gmt":"2010-12-22T20:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/turtlellc.com\/index.php\/building-a-search-center\/"},"modified":"2010-12-22T20:58:00","modified_gmt":"2010-12-22T20:58:00","slug":"building-a-search-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turtle.works\/knowledge\/building-a-search-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Building a Search Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">To build a Search Center create a new site, selecting Enterprise > Search Center with Tabs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">Once the site is built, configure the following items:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-family: arial;\">\n<li>Search scopes<\/li>\n<li>Search pages<\/li>\n<li>Search tabs<\/li>\n<li>Results pages<\/li>\n<li>Assign scopes to result pages<\/li>\n<li>Results tabs<\/li>\n<li>Advanced Search Pages<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;\" >Create a Search Scope<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">Scopes can be created either at the Site Collection level using SharePoint Central Administrator or at the Site Collection thru Site Actions > Site Settings > Search Scopes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">If you need to narrow a scope down to folder level, then use the Site Actions > Site Settings approach. If your scopes are broader and can be handled with Content Sources and Metadata Properties then use the SharePoint Central Administration approach.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;\" ><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;\" >Create a New Search Page<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-family: arial;\">\n<li>From the Search Center<\/li>\n<li>Site Actions<\/li>\n<li>Create Page<\/li>\n<li>Enter a Title, Description and change the URL if desired<\/li>\n<li>Select (Welcome Page) Search Page<\/li>\n<li>Click Create<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;\" >Create a New Search Tab<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-family: arial;\">\n<li>Edit the new search page just created<\/li>\n<li>Click Add New Tab<\/li>\n<li>Enter a name for the tab<\/li>\n<li>Specify the name for the search page just created (ex. MySearchPage.aspx)<\/li>\n<li>Enter a tooltip<\/li>\n<li>Click OK<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;\" >Create a New Results Page<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">Search pages and tabs work in pairs, for every search page, there must be a matching results page and for every search tab, there must be a matching results tab. A unique results page allows the assignment of unique scopes to a search.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-family: arial;\">\n<li>From the Search Center<\/li>\n<li>Site Actions<\/li>\n<li>Create Page<\/li>\n<li>Enter a Title, Description and change the URL if desired<\/li>\n<li>Select (Welcome Page) Search Page Results<\/li>\n<li>Click Create<\/li>\n<li>Edit the new page<\/li>\n<li>On the Search Box > Modify Shared Web Part<\/li>\n<li>Expand Miscellaneous<\/li>\n<li>Enter the name of the new search page created above in &#8216;Target search results page URL&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Note you will come back after creating the Advanced Search page, to enter it&#8217;s URL in the &#8220;Advanced Search page URL&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Click Apply<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;\" >Assign Scopes to Result Page<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-family: arial;\">\n<li>Continue editing the new results page<\/li>\n<li>On the Search Core Results web part > Modify Shared Web Part<\/li>\n<li>Expand Miscellaneous<\/li>\n<li>Enter the name of the Search Scope created above.<\/li>\n<li>Click Apply<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p> <span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;\" >Create a New Results Tab<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-family: arial;\">\n<li>Still editing the new results page just created<\/li>\n<li>Click Add New Tab<\/li>\n<li>Enter a name for the tab<\/li>\n<li>Specify the name for the search page just created (ex. MySearchPageResults.aspx)<\/li>\n<li>Enter a tooltip<\/li>\n<li>Click OK<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p> <span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;\" >Create an Advanced Search Page<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-family: arial;\">\n<li>Navigate back to the initial Search Center so you are not looking at a results page<\/li>\n<li>Site Actions > Create Page<\/li>\n<li>Enter a Title, Description and change the URL if desired<\/li>\n<li>Select (Welcome Page) Advanced Search<\/li>\n<li>Click Create<\/li>\n<li>Click Add a Web Part<\/li>\n<li>Check &#8216;Advanced Search Box&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Click Add<\/li>\n<li>On the &#8216;Advanced Search Box&#8217; > Modify Shared Web Part<\/li>\n<li>Expand Scopes<\/li>\n<li>Check &#8216;Show the scope picker&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Change the &#8216;Display Group&#8217; to the correct one<\/li>\n<li>Click OK<\/li>\n<li>Edit the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New Results Page<\/span> previously created<\/li>\n<li>On the Search Box > Modify Shared Web Part<\/li>\n<li>Expand Miscellaneous<\/li>\n<li>Enter the name of the advanced search page created in &#8216;Advanced Search page URL&#8221;. Be sure to include the entire path.<\/li>\n<li>Click Apply<\/li>\n<li>Edit the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New Search Page<\/span> previously created<\/li>\n<li>On the Search Box > Modify Shared Web Part<\/li>\n<li>Expand Miscellaneous<\/li>\n<li>Enter the name of the advanced search page created in &#8216;Advanced Search page URL&#8221;.
